DIY Electric Violin

finshviolin.jpg

Building your Owen electric violin can be easy.
this is my first music instrument i have ever built and it turned out great.

The Wood was bought locally and some parts were bought
on eBay

the neck was bought on eBay, My carving skills just arent that good and it was
very inexpensive to buy

The pick up was also bought on EBay

I first started out with the basic dimensions for a full size Violin, by tracing the basic outline Of a acoustic Violin on a large sheet of paper. then I erased what I did not want and added in what I did by connecting the dots so to speak.
it is important to keep all the lengths the same.

The wood I chose for this Violin was Zebra Wood form Africa
and Paduak.

In the photo below is shown the area I carved out for the electronics first using a rotozip for the basic area I wanted to carve out and then I used a 1/4 inch chisel to remove the remaining unwanted wood.

after the carving was done I then glued the two haves together with wood Glue

Some of the steps I did not photograph
the photo below shows the Violin neck glued on and much of the sanding done.

after the neck was glued on I then glued the finger board on using wood glue.
also I had to drill a hole at a angle for the wire from the pickup to pass through into the hollowed out area.

Here is the finished Violin

And finally I had gotten to hear My Daughter play Her new Electric Violin.

This has been one of the most Gratifying Projects I have ever done.
Never building any kind of Music instrument before was a little intimidating
but some time ya just got to dive into it and figure it out as you go.

How did you find the exact dimensions for the violin? The wood is just for looks right? Also, how did you install the pickup? Could you draw a diagram or something? Thank you!

the basic dimensions were traced from a full size acoustic violin onto a large piece of paper.
the pickup has a small hole under the bridge to allow the pickup wire to pass through.
The body can be any shape just as long as it has the same length dimensions and the same angle on the neck.

and yes the body of the electric violin dose not rely on it resonating the sound. the pickup dose all of that through the bridge

I am a luthier and have used this pickup before (it is Korean made and it is the same pickup system that Fender uses in their FV-1 model electric violin). I always have trouble finding enough of these pickup systems to install in my company's electric violins. I always have to order a few at a time from Fender through one of their "authorized dealers".

I have talked with Fender (parts people) and they informed me of the fact that Fender does not make these pickup systems themselves; they order them from a company in Korea... they won't share with me the name of the manufacturer so that I could order these parts directly.

I understand that you purchased your pickup system off of ebay. My question to you is; Was there a manufacturer's name either on the pot assembly or on any packaging that you received? I so desperately would appreciate any information you could share with me concerning this matter!

Thanks in advance,
